The world’s greatest model train sets

If you’ve read our last blog and want to start your own model railway track then maybe a little inspiration would help?

Now, you probably couldn’t emulate these sets completely because of their sheer scale and size, but perhaps you could steal a few ideas.

Here are 5 of the world’s biggest and greatest model train sets for you to take inspiration from.

Miniatur Wunderland

We’ll start with the biggest model railway in the world.

This railway has been under construction since 2000 and is expected to be completed in 2020. Although it’s still growing you can visit the model railway in Hamburg and enjoy different lengths of its current 12,000 meter track.

You can enjoy parts of Norway, the Rocky Mountains in America, the Las Vegas strip and so much more. Plus, there are lots of hidden bonuses tucked away in the models detailed scenery and life like towns.

It’s even got an airport. AN AIRPORT!

Bekonscot Model Village & Railway

This place doesn’t quite have the scale and size of our last entry but it does have the reputation of being the oldest model railway village in the world.

Built in the 1920s for private use this model in England is becoming more and more popular each year - a testament to the fact that model railways aren’t going ‘out of fashion’ any time soon.

You can travel through 6 quintessential English villages set way back in the 20s when the track was originally established.

LOXX – Berlin

The Germans are quite good with model railways. This is the second entry that they’ve made in the list so far.

This train set features some of Berlin’s greatest landmarks and some funny everyday life accidents.

With 5,800 meters of track it has 90,000 human figures and 150 trains running at any given moment. Plus, like the Miniature Wonderland it has its very own working airport.

San Diego Model Railway Museum

At 27,000 sq FT this is the largest exhibit of its kind in North America.

It was opened in 1982 and in that time nearly 3 million people have passed through its doors. This is one of the most accurate model railways out there. It’s recreated a number of rail lines in the area using photographs and used model trains that are as accurate as can be.

The work was completed by a number of model railway enthusiasts in the area - a must for anyone interested in the hobby.

We have some of the biggest and the oldest, but let’s not forget to look at a model railway that took time out of someone’s life. Over 25 years of love was taken to create this model railway and its well worth a visit. Make sure you take your binoculars to get a closer look at every piece of intricate detail in there!
